Trigger Point Injections

Trigger points are portions of the muscles that are cause pain in a small band or knot when the overlying skin is palpated. Trigger points normally exist throughout the muscles in all areas of the body and cause no pain until irritation occurs through injury, repetitive muscle strain, poor posture and sometimes as a result of a herniated disc. If a trigger point is found to be the cause of pain, a trigger point injection consisting of local anesthetic and/or steroid can be performed in an attempt to relax the muscle and relieve pain. The injections can be performed quickly in the office, and several areas of painful trigger points can be targeted during the same session.
